If you’re driving an Acura TLX near Chesapeake, VA that you purchased from the friendly folks at Hall Acura Virginia Beach, you’re well aware that we’re you’re one-stop shop for everything automotive, including tires. And if you’ve been driving your Acura vehicle for a while but aren’t sure whether you need new tires, here’s some useful information for you.
First off, if you haven’t already done so, we recommend that you drop by after every 6,000 – 8,000 miles driven to have your tires rotated. This will ensure that the wear your tires endure is evenly spread out and not focused on one area, which can increase the possibility of an accident and/or loss of traction, especially in bad weather.
Tire wear is a big deal, and there’s a really easy way that you can evaluate it by yourself. It’s called the Penny Method, and it requires just a single copper cent. Insert the penny upside-down between two of the most-worn tire ridges and see how much of Abe Lincoln’s head is visible. If any part of his head is concealed by tread, your tires are still ok to drive on. However, if Abe’s head is completely visible, your tires are worn out and you need new ones. This typically happens around 40,000 miles, but that number can fluctuate depending on several factors: your driving style, the road conditions you commonly encounter, and the type of weather in your part of the country. Here in Maryland, we get a good mix of sun, rain, and snow, so 40,000 miles is a good estimate for when you’ll need to visit us for new tires.
